Ontologies of Borders – The Difference of Deleuze and Derrida

In this talk I take up the issue of border in the sense of individuating and classification, in other words the ontological issue of identity and difference. I will consider Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Derrida, two contemporary philosophers who both philosophize border and difference in terms of becoming and doing rather than being, but, I argue, do it in very different way in comparison to each other. I consider the difference between their philosophical approaches through two particular concrete cases of processes of differentiation, drawn from specific temporal contexts: one concerning a politico-geographical border (of Finland as a nation), and the other one a classification in the realm of scientific knowledge (of sexualities). I argue that as two different attitudes to ontology Derrida’s and Deleuze’s approaches produce different foci of attention in these concrete historical processes: the attention to ontological depth and the motion of underlying substance in the Deleuzian mode, and on the one hand, attention to the action of drawing the lines and the production of identities through contingent drawings of line, in the Derridean mode. In this sense, I see the Deleuzian ontology as being closer to the traditional philosophical ideal of omnitemporality, wheras the Derridean anti-ontological attitude complementing the Foucauldian move to genealogical accounts, nevertheless remaining rather a gesture within the philosophical tradition.
