Seppo Sajama (s. 1952) toimi filosofian professorina Itä-Suomen yliopiston oikeustieteiden laitoksella Joensuun kampuksella ja käytännöllisen filosofian dosenttina Turun yliopiston filosofian laitoksella. Hänen erikoisalansa ovat etiikka ja fenomenologia. Julkisuudessa Sajama on tunnustautunut “vanhaksi humanistiksi”.
Seppo Sajama (born in 1952) is a former professor of philosophy at the University of Eastern Finland and docent at the University of Turku. His specialities are ethics and phenomenology. Sajama has publicly admitted that he is an “old humanist.”
Spinozan tulkintaoppi
Spinozan Tractatus theologico-politicuksen 7. luku sisältää hänen tulkintaoppinsa, jolla Raamatun sanoma kirkastuu ja eriuskoisten yhteiselo mahdollistuu. Spinoza vastusti fundamentalisteja, joiden mukaan Raamatun ”jokainen kohta on tosi ja jumalallinen”. Spinozan mielestä tämä hypoteesi pitäisi ensin perustella eikä vain olettaa todeksi. Ennen kuin tekstin totuutta voidaan arvioida, on ymmärrettävä sen merkitys. Merkitys edeltää totuutta: “Meitä kiinnostaa vain tekstien merkitys, ei niiden totuus.” Sanojen merkitys voidaan taas paljastaa vain tutkimalla niiden käyttöä: ”Verba ex solo usu certam habent significationem” (TTP12). Näin ymmärretty “Raamatun tulkitsemisen metodi eroaa tuskin luonnon tulkitsemisen metodista, vaan on sen kanssa sopusoinnussa”.
Spinoza’s Doctrine of Interpretation
Chapter 7 of Spinoza’s Tractatus Theologico-Politicus contains the author’s theory of scriptural interpretation. The purpose of the theory is to elucidate the message and meaning of the Bible, through which the coexistence of different dogmas becomes possible. Spinoza opposes fundamentalists, who insisted that “every part [of the Bible] is true and divine.” According to Spinoza, rather than just presuming the thesis is true, it should be justified, a task which fundamentalists weren’t concerned with. On a more general level, the meaning of a text must be understood before the truth of it can be assessed. Thus, meaning precedes truth: “We are only interested in what texts mean, not their truths.” The meaning of words can also be revealed by examining their use: “Verba ex solo usu certam habent significationem” (TTP12). Thus understood “the method of interpreting the Bible doubtfully differs from the method of interpreting nature, but rather conforms with it.”
