Sanna Tirkkonen is a doctoral researcher of practical philosophy at the University of Helsinki. She’s also known at the university as a popular lecturer. In addition to working and studying in Helsinki, she has worked and studied in Paris. Tirkkonen’s research revolves around the confluences of ethics, political philosophy and philosophy of psychiatry. Her research topics include the different ways the concept of experience is used and ethical skills. Tirkkonen is interested in how ethical activity comes into being through social encounters and how scientific knowledge is related to concrete practices and shapes concepts of self. Thereby her research literature is also connected to themes in the history of madness.

Katso hullua.

Look at the madman. The ethics and politics of perception

In our social encounters, a gaze can express silent acceptance, respect, insecurity, shyness or love. A gaze can drill, wander, objectify, disdain or shame. It can focus and confine, or we can close our eyes and not see. Sometimes we don’t stop to think about a gaze, but at other times we are uncomfortably aware of it. So, how can we acquire knowledge from a gaze or another kind of perception, like hearing or touch? This question is asked by the French philosopher Michel Foucault in his work The Birth of the Clinic, which caused a minor storm in a teacup when its Finnish translation was published. Foucault reflects upon the use of the clinical gaze often used with patients in a historical context where perception is starting to be rendered into scientific language – a time when categorization of mental illnesses was not enough. In my talk I propose that The Birth of the Clinic is a philosophical discussion about experience and perception: it sets an ethical and a political challenge for the structure of scientific knowledge, the habits of treatment and encountering.
