Arto Haapala on Helsingin yliopiston pitkäaikainen estetiikan professori. Hän on tutkinut monenlaisia ongelmia estetiikassa, mutta on erikoistunut etenkin sen ontologiaan, tulkintaan, ympäristöestetiikkaan ja Martin Heideggerin filosofiaan. Hänen viimeaikaisin tutkimuskohteensa on ollut arjen ympäristöjen estetiikka. Haapalan julkaisuihin kuuluu muun muassa What Is a Work of Literature? (1988), The End of Art and Beyond (toim. yhdessä Jerrold Levinsonin ja Veikko Rantalan kanssa, 1997), Interpretation and Its Boundaries (toim. yhdessä Ossi Naukkarisen kanssa, 1999), Aesthetic Experience and the Ethical Dimension: Essays on Moral Problems in Aesthetics (toim. yhdessä Oiva Kuisman kanssa, 2003), Paradokseja paratiiseissa: näkökulmia urbaanin luonnon kysymyksiin (toim. yhdessä Mia Kunnaskarin kanssa, 2008) ja Ympäristö, estetiikka ja hyvinvointi (toim. yhdessä Kalle Puolakan ja Tarja Ranniston kanssa, 2015). Vuonna 2010 Haapala perusti Aesthetic Pathways -julkaisun Gerald Ciprianin kanssa; lehti aloitettiin uudelleen otsikolla Journal of Aesthetics and Phenomenology Bloomsbury Publishersin kustantamana vuonna 2014.
Arto Haapala received his Ph.D. in Philosophy at Birkbeck College, University of London in 1988, and his M.A. in Aesthetics at the University of Helsinki. He has been Professor of Aesthetics at the Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies, University of Helsinki since 1995. He has been a visiting Professor at Temple University, Philadelphia, Lancaster University, UK, and University of Murcia, Spain, and a visiting researcher at Universities of Freiburg and Bochum, Germany. He has done research in different problems in aesthetics, particularly in ontology and interpretation, as well as in environmental aesthetics and Martin Heidegger’s philosophy. His most recent interests are in the aesthetics of the everyday environment. His publications include What Is a Work of Literature? (1988), The End of Art and Beyond (ed. with Jerrold Levinson and Veikko Rantala, 1997), Interpretation and Its Boundaries (ed. with Ossi Naukkarinen, 1999), Aesthetic Experience and the Ethical Dimension: Essays on Moral Problems in Aesthetics (ed. with Oiva Kuisma, 2003), Paradokseja paratiiseissa: näkökulmia urbaanin luonnon kysymyksiin (Paradoxes in Paradises: Issues in Urban Nature, ed. with Mia Kunnaskari, 2008). Ympäristö, estetiikka ja hyvinvointi (Environment, Aesthetics, and Well-Being, ed. with Kalle Puolakka and Tarja Rannisto, 2015). In 2010 he founded a journal entitled Aesthetic Pathways together with Gerald Cipriani, and the journal was relaunched under the title Journal of Aesthetics and Phenomenology by Bloomsbury Publishers in 2014.
Kuinka arjesta voi filosofoida?
Arki on meitä kaikkein lähimpänä, mutta samalla kaukaista ja vaikeasti tavoitettavaa. Me elämme arkea joka hetki; me rakennamme itseämme toimimalla arjen rakenteissa, toteuttamalla omia rutiinejamme, aika ajoin myös rutiineista irrottautuen ja uusia rutiineja luoden. Tämä läheisyys, omakohtaisuus ja tuttuus tekevät arjesta vaikeasti tavoitettavan: olemme niin vahvasti kiinni arjessa ja katsomme asioita oman arkisuutemme kautta, että itse arki jää yleensä huomaamatta. Vaaditaan refleksiivistä ponnistusta, jotta arjen rakenteisiin pääsee kiinni. Tarkastelen arkisuutta filosofisen estetiikan ongelmana: miksi estetiikka on ollut kiinnostunut arjesta poikkeavista ilmiöistä kuten taiteesta ja vain satunnaisesti meitä ympäröivistä jokapäiväisistä esteettisistä asioista. Kuinka arjen esteettiset ilmiöt tulisi lopulta ymmärtää.
Philosophy of Everyday Life?
In one sense everyday life is closest to us, but in another, it is quite distant and difficult to grasp. We live our everyday lives every moment; we construct who we are by operating in the structures of the everyday, carrying out our routines all the while occasionally breaking them and falling into new ones. However, the closeness, subjectivity and familiarity of the everyday are what make it difficult to grasp: we are so affixed to our everyday lives and seeing everything through them, to the point that we overlook the everyday itself. In order to understand the structures of the everyday, we must reflect deeply upon it. I examine the everyday as a problem of philosophical aesthetics: why has aesthetics always taken interest in phenomena, like art and aesthetic environments, that deviate from the everyday? How should the aesthetic phenomena of the everyday be understood?
